It’s no secret that Turmeric is on the rise in popularity, the amount of people searching for it on our site alone has seen exponential growth in the past year or so and Google is reporting the same trends, especially for people searching for turmeric tablets or turmeric capsules in the UK.

What’s incredible is that we are seeing such amazing repeat business from our customers that they must be getting some kind of positive effect which is fantastic, but what we have also seen during this process is an increase in the amount of people complaining about not getting good products from so many other high profile businesses who were just looking to cash in on a quick sale because of a trend.

This has meant that the UK turmeric tablets market has been flooded with how shall I put this Cheap knock off Turmeric Tablets which are made super cheap and then they still charge you more.. There are some products on the market that we know if we put our turmeric tablet formulation at their prices we would make a significant loss on each sale and also our customers would not have a good experience from the product and would never buy from us again.

Now we’re not saying that what’s inside the turmeric tablets these companies are selling is in any way not what is written on the label, but there is a lack of consumer knowledge about what makes the best turmeric tablets and what doesn’t it’s misleading to consumers at best. We have seen many people massively ripped off by buying inferior products, which in turn creates a sense of disillusionment about taking turmeric tablets as the ones they tried before didn’t work.

So why is there so much confusion around turmeric supplements?

Simple Turmeric is the name that the supplement is commonly known as but Curcumin is the active ingredient that has all the purported benefits and these Cheap knock off one’s use culinary grade turmeric which has only around 3% curcumin, where as decent products (Like our turmeric tablets) are standardised to 95% curcumin.

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its colour. It has been traditionally used in India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb and also smeared over brides weirdly. Even though turmeric is mainly famous for its vibrant orange colour and its role as a spice, studies have shown that it contains compounds with medicinal properties. These compounds are called curcuminoids, the most important of which for our purposes here is curcumin.

What is Curcumin?

Curcumin is the main active ingredient of turmeric, which as mentioned above has been around and used in India for thousands of years. It is reported to have powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is considered to be a strong antioxidant.Unfortunately, the curcumin content of standard culinary turmeric is not particularly high at only around 3%. What this means is that if you were to eat just normal culinary turmeric out of your spice cupboard you would have to consume ungodly amounts to get the same curcumin concentration that turmeric tablets can provide.

Basically, If you are looking to buy turmeric tablets then it’s super important to check the curcumin content to make sure you are getting a decent strength.

So what is all the fuss I hear about taking turmeric and black pepper?

It’s all about getting the body to absorb the curcumin and to be honest, that’s the point right? Why take something if you are just going to allow your body to get rid of it through excretion?

Without getting too technical, one of the ways we get rid of foreign substances is we make them water soluble so the body can excrete them, but we don’t want that for our best buddy curcumin, we want him to stay with us for a long time!

By adding black pepper it actually inhibits your body’s excretion process and studies have shown that by adding turmeric and black pepper together, the ability of your body to absorb curcumin goes up by up to 2000%!

Let’s explain a little bit more with a bad and then a good example of turmeric tablets available

Bad turmeric supplement example

If you found some turmeric supplements with the following information, our advice is to stay well clear… even if it is super cheap, your may as well eat a spoonful of turmeric out of your spice cupboard!

Nutritional InformationPer Serving
Turmeric Powder (Curcuma Longa) (Rhizomes)1000mg
Piperine
Standardised from Black Pepper Extract (Piper Nigrum)
10mg

If you bought turmeric tablets with ingredients similar to the above you have basically bought what is already in your spice cupboard which is culinary grade turmeric but they’ve thrown in a little black pepper to confuse you just enough and convince you that what they are selling is premium  and I bet they charged you a load too.

Remember the curcumin strength in culinary turmeric is about 3% so you would actually only be getting about 30mg of curcumin!

Good turmeric supplement example

However if you saw a product like the following that would be a good starting point for you when buying turmeric tablets as it contains concentrated curcumin which the black pepper can then help your body absorb.

Nutritional InformationPer Serving
Turmeric Extract 500mg (20:1 extract) from 10,000mg Turmeric
Standardised at 95% Curcumin
Providing: Curcumin
500mg
Black Pepper Extract5mg

In the above table the turmeric supplement serving contains 500mg of turmeric extract, standardized to 95% curcumin which is 475mg instead of the 30mg previously. This is the equivalent of 10,000mg of normal culinary turmeric I was told once this is the same as eating 10 curries but I suspect there is little evidence to back up that statistic!

It’s the concentration of the curcumin that is so important in any turmeric tablets you buy and the 5mg of black pepper is more than enough to increase the bioavailability of the curcumin (Your body should suck it up like a sponge)

As a bonus… An excellent turmeric supplement example:

A lot of the time with supplements what is needed is unique formulations with ingredients that complement each other in working towards the same objectives

Nutritional InformationPer Serving
Turmeric Extract 500mg (20:1 extract) from 10,000mg Turmeric
Standardised at 95% Curcumin
Providing: Curcumin
500mg
Rosehip Extract (20:1)
Providing the equivalent of 3200mg of whole rose hip fruit
160mg
Vitamin C84mg
Black Pepper Extract5mg

Ok, you caught us… that is the formulation of our turmeric tablets but there is a reason for our additions we see around 80% of customers rebuying month on month because they claim it works for them. We have found that by also giving a high dose of Rosehip Extract and Vitamin C our turmeric tablets seem to work well for people. We honestly get ridiculous amounts of really positive feedback from customers about it but current health claim laws prevent us from displaying them on the product page, so here are two.
